Welcome to Living Light Theatre!

I am excited to announce the formation of a new professional-level theatre company here in San Diego.  Alongside friends in the local performing arts community, I have founded the Living Light Theatre Company.  We are pleased to announce that the inaugural production will be Athol Fugard's acclaimed play, Master Harold and the Boys.  This production will be presented at the Lyceum Theatre in May of this year.

This wonderful piece is set in the racially divided South Africa of apartheid. It centers on a white teenage boy and his relationship with his two black servants. The shadow of racism and bigotry as it is passed down through generations then absorbed into one's culture without ever deliberately choosing to accept it; looms over the three as the future of their friendship comes into question in a moving and powerful narration that only Fugard could deliver. Moving deftly between comedy and tragedy, this story celebrates the light of the spirit within each of us, and the courage to choose love.  Of all of his plays, none is more personal than Master Harold and the Boys because it relates to a boyhood incident of his which haunted him for years until he tried to atone by writing this play in 1982. His works, though concerned with race and politics, are best viewed with an eye for creating a better planet--a more loving and understanding world. Fugal wrote, "I’ve tried to celebrate the human spirit and its capacity to create, its capacity to endure, it's capacity to forgive, its capacity to love, even though every conceivable barrier is set to thwart the act of loving."

30 years ago in March  the world premiere of Master Harold…and the Boys, directed by Athol Fugard, opened at the Yale Repertory. From there it moved to Broadway’s Lyceum Theatre in May 1982. Our work will be an homage and a thank-you to Arthol Fugard as he turns 80 on June 11.

We have assembled a team of wonderful actors, technicians and designers to help mount this drama.  We are scheduled to begin rehearsals shortly and would love to have your support.  We are looking for a few ground-floor sponsors to help us bring this meaningful piece to the stage.  For your tax-deductible support, we are offering the following considerations for you or your company:
